How Do We Know We're Not Just Making This Stuff Up? (Intro to Hermeneutics, Part 4)
Our not-boring crash course in Bible interpretation continues
A few days ago I listened to an interview with Tim Mackie of The Bible Project on the Theology in the Raw podcast. Tim asked a really great question:
“How do we know we’re not just making this stuff up when we read the Bible?”
Then he stated it another way: “How do we gain a toolset that gets us in touch with actually hearing somebody’s voice that’s not our own when we read the Bible?” I was struck hard by those questions because I’m more aware than ever of my tendency to import my own preferences and assumptions into my reading of Scripture.
Here’s the thing - I don’t want to hear my own voice (or the voice of my favorite pastor/teacher/theologian) when I read the Bible. Ultimately, I want to hear God’s voice and I have a high degree of confidence that you want that too. That’s why I’m so passionate about studying and teaching biblical hermeneutics. It’s way too easy to make stuff up, and the Bible is way too important to let that happen. This Intro to Hermeneutics course is a great first step toward gaining that toolset Tim was talking about, and it’s been such a joy to share it with you. Here’s the fourth and final installment. Enjoy!
